Friday Evening: May 8 – MALES at the Movies series presents The Chronicles of Narnia – The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe
C.S. Lewis’ most famous children’s work comes to life with magnificent cast and glorious cinematography. Set during the bombing of Britain in 1939, siblings Lucy, Edmund, Susan and Peter are sent out of war-torn London to the country estate of a mysterious professor (Academy Award nominee Jim Broadbent). There they discover the world of Narnia through a magical wardrobe while playing a game of “hide-and-seek”. Once there, the children discover a charming, once-peaceful land inhabited by talking beasts, dwarfs, fauns, centaurs and giants that has been turned into a world of eternal winter by the evil White Witch (Academy Award nominee Tilda Swinton). Aided by the wise and magnificent lion Aslan (Liam Neeson), the children lead Narnia into a spectacular, climactic battle to be free of the Witch’s power forever.
Friday Evening: June 5 – MALES at the Movies series presents Shadowlands
Shadowlands is the true story of C.S. Lewis’s later life. C.S. Lewis (Academy Award winner Anthony Hopkins) is a world-renowned writer and professor. Unmarried, he leads a gentleman’s life filled by intellectual pursuits, remaining untouched by any great passion until he meets Joy Gresham (Academy Award winner Deborah Winger) and her son Douglas (Simon Birch’s Joseph Mazzello). Joy is a feisty, abrasive New York divorcee whose sharp-edged, no-nonsense attitudes take Lewis by surprise. Bursting unexpectedly into Lewis’ world, Joy shocks his associates and awakens him to deep emotions he has written about but never experienced. Slowly he opens his heart to this woman, and their romance shatters the walls of his cloistered world.
